The Importance of Ludwig von Mises

Ludwig von Mises was one of the most important theoretical opponents of socialism and national socialism. Socialist Oskar Lange once suggested that every socialist state should have a statue dedicated to Mises because his well-founded and factual criticism was the only one that socialists took seriously. The National Socialists had him at the top of their list of enemies: on the eve of Austria’s “annexation”, his apartment in Vienna was looted, and the Soviets then looted his writings – and kept them locked away until the end.

Only after the end of the Soviet Union were these writings discovered in an archive. Ludwig von Mises prevented a catastrophic famine in Vienna because he was able to convince the socialist Otto Bauer to distance himself from Bolshevism. The importance of Mises remained great later, but always in the background. He was probably the most important economic inspiration for the German economic miracle under Ludwig Erhard – through the economists Adolf Weber and Wilhelm Röpke, who were friends of Mises and close to Erhard, and through the effect of his work “Die Gemeinwirtschaft”. Later, Ludwig von Mises was instrumental in rediscovering the “Austrian School of Economics” in the USA.

Today, the memory of Ludwig von Mises could unleash a Ukrainian economic miracle – the potential of this young and culturally rich country is huge. Ludwig von Mises wrote his first academic paper about the subservience of the Ukrainian farm workers in Galicia in order to show a way to a free future. The Ukrainian soil could turn out to be the most fertile in Europe in every respect. The Mises LEM Lviv is intended to provide the spiritual seeds for this.

Ludwig von Mises

1881 – 1973

Ludwig von Mises was born in Lemberg (Lviv), then part of Austrian-ruled Poland, now a city in Ukraine. He was one of the most important economists and social philosophers of the 20th century. Von Mises provided the epistemological justification for the system of free markets. This is based on the unconditional respect for private property and is against any form of state interference in economic and social life. He is a great inspiration for Christoph Heuermann. For this reason, the idea of acquiring the house where he was born and converting it into a museum was born.

A Forgotten Heyday of Peaceful Cooperation and Totalitarianism as a Historic Warning

History of Cooperation and Coercion

The rich legacy of the golden age of a multicultural Lemberg symbolizes the cultural blossoming of a united but decentralized Central Europe, in which people of the most diverse ethnic groups and religions peacefully traded, researched and creatively worked together in urban areas for a long time. However, the past must not only be romanticized, we must also learn lessons from it.

Socialism, nationalism and anti-Semitism have raged in Lviv in particular. These bitter experiences can be an instructive legacy if you face them seriously and with an open mind. In the atmosphere of a salon, a place of peaceful civic exchange, history is brought to life through an extensive digital library.

Visitors can learn from the past according to their own interests and at their own pace – leisurely or intensively – using selected digital and analogue display boards, excerpts, articles, books, videos, audio documents and later virtual reality experiences from the past.
